Better Late than Never.......(DUW)

Nathan Wells Jul 09, 2008 01:23 AM

Before I begin, I want to just take a moment to congratulate all of you on a great start to this year's season. I have thoroughly enjoyed everyone's posts and pictures of their projects and personal successes. Seeing beautiful gravid females, egg-laying and babies hatching out certainly gets everyone excited. So again thank you all for making this forum what it is today.

As most of you know, even though I work with a handful of different triangulum, my focus for years has been to produce some of the nicest (and oddest) sinaloans and nelson's seen around. Well, the last two weeks have been going very well down here in Texas. Some might say "wow, that's pretty late to get started on this year's breedings" but, in all actuality most of my colonies of animals will naturally breed later in the year as is the case with most sinaloans and nelson's.

So, on one late evening nearly two weeks ago, with my pregnant wife falling fast asleep, I slipped into the snake room where I was greeted with curious eyes and smiling faces. With two or three sheds behind them, they somehow new that it was time.....

First I checked on the awaiting males and females

Another female Double Het (Hypoerythristic/Albino)

Hypoerythristic female

A High Yellow Albino female

Aberrant Albino male

An Applegate Splotched male

A Vanishing Pattern male

After taking my time and looking over the racks, I began introducing select females into the desired males cages. This process was no different than any other time and I didn't really think much of it. After every male was set up with a lady to his liking the tail thrashing began. I turned off the light and left the room.

After taking a quick shower I returned. Sneaking around I found the room quiet. To my amazement almost every pair of sinaloans I had thrown together were either locked up or just moments from copulation! I have had handfuls of animals breed at the same time but never 14 pairs at once! It was simply incredible.

What a sight. I first noticed my high yellow Moody Line albinos locked up as well as an high yellow male with a nice het female. The hypoerythristic or "pumpkin" sinaloans were breeding as well as two pairs of double hets (hypoerythristic/ albinos). High white albinos and my aberrant and striped albinos were seeing quite a bit of action too. Diming the lights not to disturb them too much, I was able to get a few shots. Others I left alone....

High Yellow Albino with het female

Hypoerythristics

Double Hets (Hypoerythristic/Albino)

Another pair of double hets

This male, a possible hypoerythristic albino was caught doing the deed with a nice double het female. Should make for some interesting offspring.

Moving onto another rack, the double het (splotched/albino) sinaloans were breeding along with a few pairs of super nice splotched and vanishing pattern sinaloans.

Double Hets (Splotched/Albino)

Hopefully those breedings will produce more incredible looking babies. Here are a few from the class of 2006.

And a few more like the ones from the class of 2007.

A very cool pairing of a high white albino to an incredible looking splotched. Hope to get some really interesting double hets from these.

And lastly, a very beautiful pair of albinos

Just as quickly as it began, the honeymoon was over. I was still in amazement as I looked over the room. Then it quickly dawned on me, only 14 males chose to breed and I still had a handful of females that didn't get their chance that evening. Man, this year is looking good.
As of this evening, after multiple opportunities to pair up, 12 of those 14 females that bred two weeks ago are now gravid, along with three additional females. Just like most are having a stellar year with hondurans, this just might be mine for sinaloans. I've got some sweet hondurans but, I'll save that for another post.. LOL...
Hope you enjoyed the post and thanks again to every active member who contributes their time to this forum.

Another great post Nathan!!

I think this is the 1st time i have seen pix of your herp room & as i expected it is neat, clean, & organized.. The way animals should be housed! I really like seeing how others keep their stuff. We should post pix of our racks/herp rooms more often..

Your breeding success is a tribute to your husbandry skills.. It should be a GREAT your for you with both herp and human offspring!

Congrats, good luck & keep us posted!

I do take great pride in my personal collection and believe that if you want to be very successful at maintaining large groups of animals, proper husbandry is essential. In my eyes, no short cuts are allowed....
Thanks again on the nice compliments. Good luck on all your alterna clutches!

That's a whole lotta Nelsons Nathan!

I'm still waiting on my first clutch. They are indeed late breeders, though to be fair, I've had Hondurans drop clutches just as late. That's a great series of photos you've posted and shows the potential for selective breeding Nelsons Milks.

Thanks Tim. I have to agree with you on that...some of my hondurans take just as long before they show any interest. Looking forward to seeing what you hatch out this year my friend.

Nathan,

Great narrative, clean herp room, and awesome animals! What more could one ask for in a post? OK, Maybe a few East Texas amaura... LOL

I really like those racks. I was wondering how you heated them or if you heated the whole room. Thanks Todd

Thanks for the compliment Todd. Since I keep only triangulum and alterna in this particular room, I am simply able to heat the entire room using a small heating element with the aid of a thermostat.

That is beyond an impressive collection of sinaloans. Whew...

Locked down seems appropriate... I'm really leaning toward the hypo-E's. I'm really thinking the absense of sinaloae in my snake room has to be dealt with... lol.

Great post as usual!

Just so you know the 'contribution' your posts make to this forum is immensely appreciated. Always top-notch on all accounts. Thanks again for sharing the pics!

p.s. -- nice racks!

Sweet Nathan! Those are some awesome pairings. I am really curious to see what comes of the possbile hypoery. albino pairing. He looks like he is a hypoE albino to me though. I also really like those pied splotched sinaloans. They are so damn cool I just have to get a pair already. As always you have the best stuff.

(my double hets that I got from you were at it this morning so maybe I can get lucky too )

Later buddy,
Vinny

Nathan:

Great post and narrative. You have a truly awesome collection but don't feel bad about being a little late this year. Only a third of my Hondurans have even laid clutches yet this year. All my other females are gravid and progressing nicely (I had multiple snakes shed their pre-egg lay shed tonight).

With all your different sinaloans and Nelson's, do you have a favorite morph or pattern? I breed mostly Hondurans and even though I produce the different morphs, I find myself always favoring a nice clean tangerine.

Nathan Wells Jul 15, 2008 07:54 AM

Thanks Rob. It's hard to really pick out a favorite but if I had to choose just one...I would have to say that nothing beats a clean, bright pure Cosala sinaloan. They are truly remarkable to see in person. Thanks again.
