WHAT'S THE DEAL???????

PATGC12 Jul 09, 2008 09:11 AM

OK, am I missing something here????? What is the allure of Hondos???? Ultimate size? Color? It sure as heck isn't behavior!!!!! I have my second pair of Hondos. I open their container to change water, clean, etc., and we're off to the races!!!!! The darn things act like a racer. And if I'm quick enough to snag them (I chased one around the snake room foe the better part of an hour the other day) they make me sorry I did!!!! I am so tired of Teeth and Body Juices!!!!! I frequently get tagged by one or more of my Brooksi, but it is just a feeding response--they nip and let go. These Hondos are serious about trying to do damage!!! They hang on and chew!!!! I don't "play" with my snakes. I don't have time to handle each one. But it's easier to handle a couple of up tight Bulls I have than these things. Many Moons ago I kept WC African Rock Pythons. I don't think I got bit as much by them. The Hondos are gorgeous snakes but I rarely see them as they hide all the time. I reached in the other day to get the male out in the open and I came out with him hanging on my hand just chewing away. I'm thinking about giving them away!!!! What do y'all think?????

Shalom,

Pat GC

Try giving them xanax. lol I am not sure why yours are that bad. I can pick anyone of mine up without action being taken against me. I have a few that will wrap up around me and are tough to get back in the cage but nothing agressive or having to be chased around the house. Could you maybe film this chaseing that way at least we can get a better laugh out of it. The visual image is only worth a couple chuckles.

don't marry the cow when the milk is free when the milk drys up it's time for a new cow

You got the hondos from hell apparently. They're not normally so wound up or stressed in my experience but youngsters can be tightly wound.
The Xanax is not a bad idea, but could the temps be too high and stressing the buggers? Try a temp setting of 78-80 and feed them well.
Good luck.......Jeff

While certainly attractive, large and hardy, hondos are one of the more flighty milks there are in general. I stay away from them.

I figure, if I'm going to have a snake that has an insane feeding response, I'll have a Cal king. At least Cal kings are endearing when they latch on, or try to breed with the snake hook, or try to eat their water bowls, or defecate 3 times after eating one meal, etc.

Pat most baby hondos are like that but generally don't bite at all by one year of age even if you only hold them when you move them to clean their cages which is all I do due to numbers. All my adults don't bite although they can get fairly aggressive during feeding time. Most of my adults stay out much of the time and come to the front of their drawer to see if I have a meal when I come into the room. When I pick my adults up they are active which I like but NEVER bite or crap on me. They are great snakes to handle when adults.

hondurans are bad.Try some polyzona on for size.Very similair but even more high strung.I just can't wait to sex these 9 guys. And I look forward every year to sexing allot of hondurans etc...You just get used to it.
Most calm down very nice at about a year old or there abouts.
Some never really do calm down all that much but they usually won't bite as they get older.

Hi Pat,

How old are they? I agree with much of what has already been said in regards to age and clamness. A bite from an adult Honduran is rare. The babies are survivors that see you as a monster getting ready to eat them and it is this same survival instinct that usually makes them excellent feeders out of the egg. We have quite a few adult Hondurans and our 10yr old usually helps out on cleaning day by holding them, while we work on the cages. He also has one as a pet. Give yours some time and I think you will be happy with them. The draw for us was the colors and we are always working on new colors and combinations, as are several others. This year should be a great year for Hondurans.

One of my campbelli, in rare form, gnawed the hell out of my hand tonight -- in three different places. Sometimes there's just no escaping the fun.

Sigh. Gotta love our hobby...

Wait till you get into campbells: babies to adults. They'll give you your monies worth.

Come on now, come to my house and handle any of my adults. They're not flighty or bitey. Wait it out, keep those snakes, they will most likely settle down without any "work". I didn't hold any of mine til they were yearlings. Now they pretty much just hang out.
tty soon!
