Cool little hovabater setup

dacherrypicker Jul 09, 2008 01:44 PM

I know alot of people say that hovabaters are not the best thing for incubating. But for beginners here is a little setup. I put a small tupperware conatainer in the hovobater, there is a small hole on top of most of the incubators. I get a aquarium water pump, some tubing and a air rock. I put the stone and tube inside the top of the incubator and into the tupperware container. Turn the pump on and instant large ammounts of humidity. I also fill the bottom of the incubator with vermiculite and keep it quite moist. I put a small grate screen over the vermiculite. Put the eggs directly on the screen and put a litle bit of moistened perlite/vermiculite about half way up them. Not much just enough to what would hold the eggs in place. They get small contact with direct water coming from the perlite/vermiculite mix and the high humidity from the water pump that naturally in hot air evaporates the water. I also noticed the seal on most hovobators are not that good. I get some seal that you would use on screen windows and wedge it between the edges. Creates a tight bond and alot less air out. Within two days of this I had water condensation on the top of the incubator. Just a little idea I came up with. Might work with some other setups to jump the humidity up a little bit! Just a little experiment I made that actualy worked quite well for us small breeders! Thanks for looking and if you have anymore little tips or experiments of your own post them. Alot of people seem to ask alot of questions about getting small incubators setup. Perfect thread to start some cool ideas!

I saw a new atwoods creation last week--- they have a little incubator there-- looks almost like a wine cooler-- short 3-4 foot tall-
It was $90 and I bet you could get at least 5 clutches in the thing--- I'll go back and look again but it was nice looking-- or appealing to the eyes- as oppose to a styrofoam box... for those that want something nice.

Let me know about that! Looks arent a big deal. But this coming season I will hopefully have around 8 clutches so I dont feel like setting up or even messing with 4 hovobators!

Depending on your clutch sizes, you don't need 4 hovabators. You may very well only need one.

Good luck.
