Which uvb bulbs are people using now?

chris allen Jul 10, 2008 09:36 AM

I see the reptisun 10.0 out now, compared to what we used to use, the 5.0. Has anyone metered the two and posted readings? Has anyone noticed a difference in their animals that switched from 5.0 to 10.0 ?

Hey Chris, I talked to Terri(Fire and Ice Dragons) about 6 months ago and they did a test comparison between the 5.0 and the 10.0 and said there was absolutely no difference between the two.... Other breeders may have a different opinion on that, I use the 10.0 regardless on mine. That's a good question though, I wonder if anyone else has done a comparison?

I have heard things about the mega ray a lot, but are they worth it to buy? Anyone done any tests on them?

I have the megaray and there are meter readings on his site www.reptileuv.com . They seem to put out a lot of UVB compared to flourecent bulbs, so you dont need to supplement vit d, they also put out a lot of heat so I only use my 100w Megaray to heat and give off uvb in the cage (36x18x18) that I have for him right now.

Quite a few meter readings with many kinds of UVB bulbs and tubes have been done at the site below. It should prove beneficial

i think we all agree that the major bulbs are putting out u.v.b..As far as haveing the capability to assist in the production of D-3. but what about sustaining COLOR. 2 of my dragons when recieved where bright orange, 6 months later and under the best u.v.b. and heat bulbes, i would say that they show about 50% of that original color. i'm know trying differant combinations of light and heat to see if i can bring back that origenal color. don't take this the wrong way, but i think most buyers are more motivatived buy color than the production of D.3.

Hey John, do you have a pic of your setup the dragons are in?

dragonjohn Jul 12, 2008 11:04 PM

no.==i don't have any at present. got the camera , just got to get with the program..but i have a 100w. MEGARAY for basking area, a repti-sun 2.o for standard cage lgt..this is on presilla's cage. on elvis, he has the same except for a 5.0 repti-sun, all mounted under screen. this has been the std. setup for the last 6 mo.--i'v reciently added a 40w. bulb to the cold side to bring temps up to 80* to 85*. just guessing that maybe low temps on cold side, 65*= 70* , may effect color?
