The STENCH of a Deep Freeze unplugged...

OKReptileRescue Jul 12, 2008 01:36 AM

This is NOT a smell you will soon forget....

So I go out to get rabbits for the big girls to eat tomarrow.... I keep them in the deep freeze.... There's about 40 lbs of 'snake food' rats, rabbits, etc...
and about 70 lbs of people food-- steaks, crawfish, fish, deer, etc....

Its probably been unplugged a week or two...

I plugged it back in-- and RAN back in the house...

What do I do with this stuff? I had this happen back in december during our ice storm and the trash company was able to take it b/c it was "storm related damage" ... they won't likely do it again...
We have dead animal pick up-- but they wont take it b/c its people food as well...

I'm already dreading bagging all this up because of teh stench-- I'm not willing to seperate and bag it-- sorry- not happening...

What do I do with this?

let it refreeze and then bag it up and take it to the dump!! refreeze should help with the smell.

dig a big hole and bury it.

Might be worth it to get a generator for backup power to that freezer.

I'm with the one who said let it refreeze & take care of it then.. At any rate to help with the smell, cheap respirator masks from Lowe's or Home Depot with a little Vicks under your nose & chewing on some strong mint gum is a good way to get through a task that's really smelly.

Learned that trick doing necropsies on stranded dolphin carcasses.. THAT is a smell that haunts your dreams!

MMMmmm!!! Grind it up and make hamburgers and invite some friends over for a cookout!! I'm joking, I know that horrible smell all to well. I had an air conditioner go out in my rodent building in August a couple years ago while I was away for a few days in Vegas. When I opened the door, I almost lost my lunch. I had to do the respirator thing it was so bad. I put my yummies under about 4 feet of dirt, and drove over it with my truck to pack it down really well.
The refreezing will help some with the smell, you'll just have to figure out the best way to get rid of it.
Good luck.

can't see why animal pick up wont' take it if you tell them its all reptile food. Rodents, rabbits, and carcass pieces from road kill.

I doubt they are going to sort through it make sure they don't see a grocery store label.

I'm not really certain I want animal control asking questions... the reptiles I have are 100% legal-- but there have been doubts and huge embarassments when I pull out MY copy of the animal code laws....

It is being re-froze and I am going to take it to the dump if the trash guys don't take it monday....

uugh-- my house still stinks-- just the few seconds the thing was open- is enough to stink up over 2000 square foot--- amazing... and I haven't opened the garage yet... maybe laundry can wait a few more days...

Thanks

if the rodents and all are in some form of movable shape...find a trapper that will use it for lures or bait......they rot it down anyways.....

......either that or you'll have to bag it and have it trashed....

you said the trash won't take it?.why not.it's trash and garbage?......find a new trash company...

......you wouldn't believe the stuff in trash bags.....mine and my brother's is worse.......he still traps......and butchers his own deer and all........it's funny to see trash bags setting at the curb with deer feet sticking out the tops......LOL...yes he freezes most of his stuff if it's not cold enough and then sets it out for trash.......his trash pickup is free,,,,the whole town.....due to the fact that they are like less than a mile from the landfill with too many trucks running the road all day and creating a hazzard you really couldn't believe.

anyways.....trash it all......
