New retic cage, resin coated plywood

RedEarthExotics Jul 12, 2008 11:57 AM

Just finished a new cage and figured I would share some info about it. It is made of a resin coated plywood that I have never worked with before. It comes in black, seems lighter than regular plywood and is easy to work with. The coating is water proof and hopefully will last a while being used for a cage. I sealed the inside edges of the cage with black GE silicone II and it seems to be doing well. Very low odor, once it cured I cannot smell it at all (I had a big problem with this with the first cage I built). I added a divider in the center so I can put my male retic and female tiger retic in the same one. I am attaching a few pictures of the two cages I built, they measure 8X3X2. The cage on top is the resin coated plywood, the bottom cage is regular plywood with tile board attached to insides (I do not recommend this...the tile board does not last long).

I have never heard of resin coated plywood, I like that! I just coated some plywood with Kilz, I decided to sand it and seal it before I start cutting this time. I need to know where you got that door track!

I had never heard of the resin coated plywood either. My dad works for a pre-cast concrete company and they use it for their form boards. I hope it lasts as a cage. I got the sliding glass door track from Outwater plastics. Here is the url

Thanks for the link. Are you using the track with rollers or the simple plastic track? I just bought the simple plastic set but was a little worried because the bottom track is so shallow. It looks like a strong snake could maybe push the glass right out of it. I could swear my Vision cage has a deeper metal track and I can’t find that anywhere. I’m building my first cage with sliding glass and it’s not too late to get the right thing. I’m thinking about using two uppers (the deeper profile) and forget using the standard bottom track. Any help will be appreciated with my project, I’ll be sure to post pictures of mine soon!

I used the track with the metal rollers. This is the second cage I have built with them. I used them for my albino burm cage and they do very well. The only thing I had to do in order to make sure there was enough glass up inside the upper track though is to make two notches in the lower track to set the rollers in. If I didn't do this, the glass plus the roller would not be setting in the upper track enough for my liking. I am not describing it very well, so I'll post a pic to show you what I did. It works real well, I use the same notches for both the front and rear glass. The notches are in such a place that when the doors are shut they don't come near lining up with the wheels, so the doors are secure in the track. The first pic shows how much glass is in the track, it is definitely strong stuff. The second pic shows me lifting the glass up to get the wheels through the notches to get the glass out. Without the notches I was not able to get the distance between the top and bottom tracks to be where I thought there was enough glass in the track. In order to get the glass in or out of the tracks without the notches, the glass was barely in the top track. I hope I'm making sense with this, it's kind of hard to explain.
