Egg Bound? Advice needed..

serpsel Jul 13, 2008 08:51 AM

I have a female hypo honduran. She bred for me two years ago, she had last year off, and this year she was actively bred. I am almost certain she has eggs in her cause I can see where she is visibly thicker. I ran my fingers down her abdomen and can feel like 5 to 6 lumps in her. Tomorrow will be two weeks since her post ovulation shed. Should I be really worried here? If so, is there anything I can do? Any advice here will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi,

I wouldn't be too worried yet, but make sure that she has access to a nest box (at both the warm and cool end of the enclosure), is housed alone and has plenty of water. I might also soak her in some luke warm water for a couple of hours to make sure she is good and hydrated.

Has she seemed very active? cruising around the enclosure and very restless???

Best,
Vinny

Thanks for your response Vinny. She has been sitting in her nest box and I haven't noticed her being restless or cruising aroung the cage. I put a shoebox container with water in it and I found her soaking this morning. Do you think it might make a difference that their is no lid on the nest box? It is just a 16 quart sterlite with damp green moss. Another female I had with the same set up laid her eggs about 7 days POS. I have seen where some people make nest boxes by cutting a small hole in the top of the lid or on the side and leave the lid on the container. >>

I would make sure your nest box has a somewhat moist material like spagnum moss in it, put a top on it (helps them feel secure)and just cut a small hole for her to come in and out of. I would leave a small water bowl in with her large enough for her to drink water out of but take out the box with water so she does not lay in it and kill the eggs if they are good. I would then just leave her alone and check on her once or twice a day. She should pass the eggs on her own in time.

Hi Alex,

I would leave her alone, unless you think she is in distress and needs attention from a qualified vet. We have had Hondurans swell up and not produce anything before. The Hypo baby that we just posted above is an example of this. Last year it's mother was huge. She was bred several times and we thought for sure that she was gravid, but she never laid the first egg. She did produce a great clutch this year. Some will try to pop eggs with a needle and some will try to force the eggs out manually, but I think these things do more harm than good. The best approach is patients. Opinions will vary, but that is our two cents.

Good Luck!
