BD Advice

Hey all, ( I posted in the health section, and no response)

my daughter's bf just gave me his sub adult beardy, since he has been working to much to take care of it. I noticed yesterday that his throat was black, and now this morning it looks swollen.

I have been doing some research and determined that it may a toxicity issue, as I may have over supplemented him. I was using Dragon Dust by T-Rex. I sprinkled it on his bok choy over the last 3 days feeding.

I also bought some pre packaged live crickets that had a carrot in the container. Could that have been the Vit A overdose?

Any other ideas? I am looking for a vet but will watch him for now.
~OK~ Update - while I was typing this and checked my boy, his throat is no longer black and does not appear to be swollen at all now. I dropped some crickets in, and he was jumping at the tube as I was dumping them out!

Sorry this is long, just a newb to dragons. He is currently in a 20 long. It appeared he got to hot yesterday, as he was trying to claw his way through the glass. I turned off his basking lamp (50W) and he chilled. He is eating well today, just a nervous new parent I guess!

The crickets with the carrot is no problem u would have to be giving a steady diet of carrtos to the lizard in order for that to be a problem. The black beard is normal for male dragons and his neck swellig my drangon usualy does it in morning. One problem is the tank size a 75 gal would be a much better size for an adult dragon.

Thanks so much, I will breath a little easier. It will take a minute to figure out this guy. His appetite is fine, loves those greens.

That is a sweet set up...I am looking to upgrade, I only had the dragon a week. Looking to see what snake is going to lose their home. I have a 55 gal in mind, just missed a 50 gal tall, that would have been sweet.

for a bearded dragon you don't want a 'tall' aquarium as floor space is more important than height. a 50gal long or breeder, would work best.

Bearded dragons blacken their beards for many reasons including territory displays, mating courtship, and stress, sickness can cause it too.

You need to move your dragon out of the 20 gal cage right away and into at least a 55 gal long or any cage that has 4'x2' of floor space. Height can range from 16-24". Appropriate UVB bulb and basking light is also needed. You need to have a basking temp range of 95-115F preferably set up so your dragon has several areas to bask in that range available. Cool side should be around 75-80F or room temp if its not much below 70F. Nighttime temps can go as low as 65F for the entire cage.

I also suggest reading basic care sheets for bearded dragons such as the one found on the site below. Their nutritional chart is also very good for determining what to feed your dragon and how often for that particular green. Sub adult dragons should get insects once or twice a day, green available all day long.
