Lying on back??

natsamjosh Jul 13, 2008 02:28 PM

It's been a while since I had my BRB and BCI, but I don't recall either of them ever doing this. Mendoza, my 3 month old ARB, was lying (mostly) on his back when I checked him this morning. (His
back half was turned over, and his upper half was behind the water bowl out of sight, so I initially thought he was dead.) He ate a hopper mouse about 4 days ago, and still has a slight bulge. He was laying over the hotspot, which is about 84 degrees. (Don't know the exact humidity, I just mist the enclosure every day or two.) Cool part of the cage is about 75 degrees.

Do I need to be worried? Just doesn't look normal to me, but I'm not sure what normal is.

Thanks for any assistance!

Ed

Hmmm, thought I replied...

I do see my gravid BRB females lying on their backs "belly up" I've also seen the males including Fluffy do that but rarely. Does make my heart skip a beat.

Did he right himself when you opened the cage?

IMO while not necessarily a bad sign, could be. Keep an eye on him and check your temps etc. Compared to proper numbers for that SSP...

Dave,

Yes, it scared the crap at of me, I thought for sure he was dead when I first saw him. (He's certainly not gravid! )

Great question about him righting himself, because that's one more thing that worried me - he didn't right himself even when
I lightly prodded him. One thing I forgot to mention is that I
just turned on the heat tape for his hot spot. I'm hoping he just did this to help digest his meal??? I just checked him, he's still on the hot spot but right side up.

Thanks!
Ed

I would watchit, but not be too worried. I have a brb that seems to be upsidedown quite a bit. Once I start to handle it - he become normal and he is very healthy.

Thanks Mike. Good to know this is not totally out of the ordinary, I've just never seen it before with the handful of (non-gravid) snakes I've had.

Ed,
....My adult ARBs both spend some time on their backs like that. I am in Florida and will check to see how many of the babies are doing it when I get home tomorrow. I think they do but I have not really noticed.

He seems fine, went to the bathroom tonight, and hasn't laid on his back since I posted a couple days ago. Interesting.

Thanks for the input guys.

Ed

FRoberts Jul 15, 2008 02:21 PM

he looked like he needed to piss to me (noticed slight caudal bloating)and certain meals fill them up and they may lie like that cause it makes them feel more comfortable, he is fine and it is no sign of not being able to right themselves which is a symptom related to inclusion body disease, which is not what's wrong here IMO.

It's quite simple

He was bloated and needed to vacate is my call.

I have seen this bloat in many pythons and then they vacate and it goes away.

When one is uncomfortable they often try to get in a position to elevate the discomfort.

Go back and look at the pic's, the caudal distention is obvious.

it should be noted, I most often see this bloat when chickens are used as a prey source, I have also seen it with rodent prey, look at the bloat by the cloaca, I bet it has gone away after he vacated.

If your arm hurts, do you sleep on it ?
