Egg laying box question

bcisco Jul 13, 2008 09:19 PM

My female beardie is gravid and ready to pop (she hasn’t started digging, but she is huge and hasn’t been moving around all that much the last few days), but does she really need a 1ft deep container to lay her eggs?? I have the hovabator heating and ready for the eggs, but what do people normally use for a lay box? A 1ft box doesn’t sound like a reasonable container to even put in a tank. Should I just fill up a 10g with sand and make her a separate habitat or would doing that add too much stress?

What about a foot long Tupperware that's around 4 inches tall? I don't think I can fit a kitty litter bog in their tank....so something that big probably will not work.

Any advice?

You will notice she should go off feed and scratch around the tank alot just prior to laying. I used to use a seperate egg laying container...........a large rubbermaid tub. Fill the bottom with sand/dirt/vermiculite or whatever you use(I used mostly dirt for egg laying), slop it to one side, start a little cave yourself if you want and put her in the tub for the day. You can repeat this daily until she lays. It has to be enough dirt for the female to actually be able to make a tunnel or cave and physically get in it. You can put a little clamp light on it if you want to give her some light and heat. I dont have any pics of what I used to use at the moment, but it was pretty easy and simple.

i did the same thing as well, just moved my females into a large rubbermaid container filled with soil, sand, vermiculite. this worked easier for me than putting a lay bin in the cage. i had a clamp light on the container for heat.

in my opinion a foot long egg laying bin is too small. Do you mean a foot deep? Most egg laying bins should be big enough for your dragon it get into and turn around, a foot long is shorter than most dragons. I think a 24"x16"x12" (lxwxh)rubbermaid bin would serve well as a egg laying bin. Should have about 8" of sand though it can be sloped as previously described.

A little 10 gal tank isn't going to be acceptable as an egg laying bin...your female may use it, but if she doesn't like it then you risk she will end up laying elsewhere in the cage or not laying her eggs at all.
