Lighting and Heating

cardiacsmd Jul 13, 2008 11:07 PM

I just wanted some opinions on the heating in my ball pythons cage. What I'm doing right now is having a timer turn on a heat lamp at 9AM and turning it off at 8PM. Then at 8PM I have a timer turn on a heat pad and turn off at 9AM. Is this a good method of giving the snake a basking spot during the day but still some warmth at night? I'm just trying to maintain the night and day heating cycles. Thanks!

i keep my heat pads on 24/7 also i just started doing this and my pastel had his first complete shed. finally i didnt have to give him a bath and peel off his hide. i also just use daylight. i stopped using top heaters it dries out the enclosure too much for my liking

During the Summer, I use a heat mat 24/7 with a thermometer probe under the warm side hide. I also have a hide on the cool side.

For the winter, depending on the temperature in the house, I complement the heat mat with an overheard infrared light. No UV lighting required. Be careful to keep your snake's enclosure away from radiators or vents during the winter to avoid drying out your snake.

I found that an overhead heating source was drying out some of the scales on my ball.
