kurma Sep 02, 2003 10:38 PM

I amd using a reostat for 4 cages three of which have flew watt heat tape the last is a eco terra , my question is since is different heat tape they won't all by the same temp right? I was thinking of getting a Thermostat anybrands I shoud stay away from? I'm wanitn one of the 30 dollar ones is Alife ok? Will I have the smae problem with it, If I set the probe in one cage the others temps will change according to the one rigth still having the smae problem. What about the expensive ones how do they controol multiple cages?
Thanks
Xavier

well yes they will more than likely a have differnt temps depending on the tapes or uth if they are all differnt depending on their size. A thermostat is going to cause you the same problems as the reostat due to only one cage being probed. I think the cheaper ones sometimes work good sometimes don't just a gamble with them. You will find some on here that have had trouble and some people that have never had a problem. I use dimmer switch style reo's with all my set-ups. Don't really know how the more expensive thermos work for sure but would say they would have to use multiple probes.

Geeboo had some very good points, I agree with what he said. I went on a quest for a multi probe thermostat, but they were all far too expensive for me. Most of the ones I found were for industrial purposes.

The most cost effective way I’ve found is to use dimmers from the hardware store, the wall mount type. Please don’t try this if you are unfamiliar with house wiring and the dangers associated with it.

It’s very important to buy a good digital thermometer for each cage when using dimmers (rheostats). This allows you to tweak each dimmer to provide the right amount of heat, because house temperatures tend to change throughout the year. Good luck, and keep us posted!

I'll stay with my reostat, I have a temp gun and a digital thermometer that IU move around from time to time. Since three are flew watt that should be ok , I may just switch the one with a flex wat so they are all the same. But I think they both getto the same temp without one so I should be ok.
