Snake at home in Eastern Oklahoma

sassifrasstea Jul 14, 2008 07:59 PM

There has been a very dark gray snake living in our garage for a few months. I don't know exactly how long, but the mice have been gone for months. See him only occassionally. He is about 2 1/2 feet long, yellow under head. Could not make out eyes. Has some barely visible markings on his side. He does not seem to bother the dogs and they don't seem to notice him. He has been hanging around the outside of the house (back door and front steps). He was seen slithering into the little water garden this afternoon. We don't want to harm him, but we don't want to be harmed either. If he is a friendly he can stay. Can anyone help? Will try to get a picture if he sticks around for one.

It sounds like it's probably a totally harmless Ratsnake. If you can manage to get a descent photo, we can positively identify it for you.

I'm glad to hear you don't intend to harm it,...it just wants to be left in peace. The little guy isn't capable of harming the dogs in the least either,..so they will be fine.

best regards, ~Doug

There is a pretty good website for ID'ing OK snakes at www.oksnakes.org. There are good photos and info there.
