AUS Press: Toad lickers may get cure

Jul 15, 2008 12:33 PM

Yes, yes ... I know. The little brutes are neither 'venomous' nor 'reptiles' ... but their hearts are in the right places, and with your indulgence - maybe we can extend some 'visiting rights' for today!

AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION 11 July 08 Cane toad lickers may get cure for overdose soon
Darwin: Researchers may have a lead on how to treat people who lick cane toads and overdose on the toxins.
Menzies School of Health Researcher Bart Currie says people licking the pests for a high is quite common, but sometimes they get more then they bargained for.
"[There have been] quite a lot of deaths in other parts of the world from people trying to use cane toad venom for recreational purposes and what it does is stop the heart."
But Dr Currie says the key to finding a treatment for the poison might be found in the Territory's slatey grey and keelback snake populations that are able to eat the toads without dying.
"If we could figure out first of all how the venom is working on that animal and then secondly what component of the animal protects it against that venom".
He is hoping further studies will produce a treatment for people with cane toad poisoning.

making a cure for people who do that is like making a cure for fat guys who ate too many Whoppers.

And does anyone at least buy the toads a drink before they start licking on them?

Oh yee of classical education ... perchance you remember this line from an old Dave Barry column?

"Also, how do they get the toad excited? Show it movies? Give it a tiny marital aid?"

here's another one: who first discovered that licking a toad would get you high? How drunk does one have to be in order for toad licking to seem like a good idea?

some college students down in Florida were doing the same thing with a certain species of catfish. Do people just sit around licking animals until one of them results in a high?

Maybe the gas prices have driven up the cost of weed.
