I plan to do so next year, as I love the pueblan's color and the brooks' demeanor. I have only seen 1 picture of what someone called a "Brooklan", and was wondering if any of you have done so and have any pics?
Thanks

There is a hybrid forum for those questions. You will not get a good response here. Some people really frown upon that.

Thomas Davis, and some other's certainly would, but that type of thing is the very LAST thought most on this forum would ever have. Most of us here keep species and subspecies of everything as identifiable as possible and do NOT condone the mixing of species, or even subspecies if at all possible.
The hybrid forum is really the proper place to present the post.
I really wish you would strongly consider not doing that,....but I don't have the energy to explain why right now because I just took a short break from a "boxing match" over this very thing on another forum.

actually, i'd like to hear it. I have never bred any snakes other than producing a few hundred garter snakes by accident as a kid, and I am just starting to research the hobby. If you feel strongly about it, then i want to know that side of the arguement. I may find that I agree and end up taking up the anti-hybridization fight.
Perhaps you can direct me to any links to this discussion. I am all about educating myself before I do anything.
Well,...the whole thing has been an ongoing thing for a long time, and every so often this thing gets re-hashed, so it might be a little dificult for you to figure out what all the "steam" is about at first. But after you get into it, you can begin to see why. The thing basically begins at a post titled..."MBK X Calking Cross(pic)". After a bit, it really gets heated, and you will see my posts(DMong) involved with a bunch of posts. the whole boxing match has MANY different titles as it zig-zags all across, back and forth across the screen. It is LOOOOONG, about 2 feet or so. Other's that have some good points are....shannon brown, DISCERN, charleshanklin, JKruse, and myself. You won't have any trouble noticing the the people that don't understand the potential problem, these are also dudes some of us have ALWAYS had a problem with, as they will be battling tooth and nail with no good reason to do so whatsoever, as you should be able to see quite clearly after a while.
It's all about keeping the seperate species, and subspecies separate to maintain all their individual integrity for ALL to be able to enjoy in the future of our hobby, and not about producing something a little different that WILL get introduced into other folks genuine lines to make even MORE questionable, unidentifiable snakes. When people buy something, wouldn't it be nice if they actually got the genuine article, and not an animal that had other genetic lineage mixed into it?. There are already many many many like this already in the hobby, and these animals get bought and sold to make yet many many more, and get bought by whoever, and are bred to WHATEVER. I'm not talking about stuff that jumps out from the table as a definite man-made hybrid, or intergrade, although later on depending what they are bred to later certainly WILL also have strong potential to create problems. It's later on!, that many of these people don't think, or care about in the LEAST. It's hey dude!, check out the crazy colors and mixed up pattern on this snake I just got from Joe Blow!
One day soon, all the snakes that were once genuine, will be so unidentifiable from being crossed to this and that,.....that one day very soon you just might walk into a reptile show, and see endless tables with deli cups that are simply labeled....."snake".
Anyway, I could go on about this and make an entire book about just this subject alone, but It's really impossible to explain this to someone in just a few short paragraphs. When you have been in this hobby as long as some of us have, it is frustrating that all anyone wants to do anymore is ruin the integrity of once truly genuine species/subspecies of snakes.
I hope you will begin to see some good reasons for NOT doing this practice for yourself.....best of luck!

Thanks for pointing this out, and I do see your point. For example, I would never consider crossing my scarlet with another species because I think she is absolutely perfect just the way she is.
On the other hand, there is my Brooks who I think has the greatest demeanor of any snake I have ever owned, and think "hey, wouldn't he be great if he had some crazy coloring" while my pueblan is beautiful but she craps on me whenever I handle her, and is always hidden......
The conservationist in me kinda leans your way.
Looks like the next year will involve a lot of forethought.
Thanks again for educating and not attacking!
This really sums up my feelings on the issue. Thanks for putting it out there.
no dougg i would not do that cross but if the OP does want to i say GO FOR IT id love to see it, it will take some trickery though! our snakes are for our pleasure they are DEAD to nature so HAVE FUN! produce what you want to produce. if you do sell/gift babies be sure to represent them correctly. though a pueb, brooks cross will be very obvious visually. this fear the purist have of unidentifiable crosses ruining captive ssp. lines is just that

Gray-Banded Kingsnake
actually with domestic dogs their is no hybridizing at all.
ALL domestic dogs are of the same lineage. it wasnt until recently (early to mid 19th century) that most "breeds" of dogs came along. yes their are differant "breeds" but all are the same species with the exception of wolfs.
mixing breeds of dogs is how all differant breeds came about in the first place. their are pedigrees and such in order to keep lines seperate or to keep them held to a standard, but all in all domestics are domestics if it be a chiuaha(sp) or a great dane they are one in the same.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.
I believe most of the folks in this forum have an "ethical code" that would find it repugnant to do what you suggest. I own both brooks and pueblans and the temperment of both species are fine. There are several species of colubrid that are not suitable for constant handling. Some of my animals like Brazilian Rainbow Boas are strictly display animals because I have a thing against pain and my personal bloodshed. What will end up happening, if you produce what I personally consider junk, the snakes that look more like brooks and pueblans will be sold as such, which would be horrible for the person wanting to add them to their breeding colony. What you produce that truly looks unique will not get you any respect around here, in my opinion. There are enough recessive genes out the in both species to experiment with. I wish you the best and hope you reconsider............
