Breed more than once per season??

niddy Jul 15, 2008 07:53 PM

Hey gang...ltns! Hey my Bindy bred already this season...laid 3 clutches and was done (or has been for 2 months) But in the last 2-3 weeks, Albie (her man) is gettin kinda.....ahem...exited around her again, and he's been exersizing his husband-ly rights lolol. And I swear she's looking like she might be preg...er...gravid again :-P

Could she lay more eggs? Or do they do just one "breeding" (with several clutches) per year?

Thanks gang!

This is why the male should be housed seperately, so the female(s) aren't bothered and constantly under attack. I would get a seperate cage for him, that way you control when they are going to mate and you can give the females the time they need to rest, put weight back on, increase calcium levels....etc.

I'm sceptical that she'll lay more eggs. Generally the females produce eggs and then the male fertilizes them, not the other way around.

I have no m/f pairs together right now. Seems this time of year the males get very aggressive with their mates and I have a low tolerance for dragon abuse. It's most likely just a territorial thing. Have you seen them mating? or is it just a dominance display?

Always best to have extra enclosures. You could put the 2 females together for a while.

Hey BDlvr! LTNS! Maybe it is just a dominance display. My question still is...can females breed more than once per season???

And believe me...I've tried seperating them...if you ever want to see a lizard suffering from deep depression, come see my Albie without his gals. He'll stop eating, basking, and pace 12 hours a day till he gets them back.

Thanks, guys!

to answer your question, yes they can and will breed more than once per season. usually you can expecy 2-5 clutches per breeding.

Your answer is surprising to me. Of course there are always exceptions to every rule.

In the wild, dragons brumate or slow down in the winter. When the come out of brumation in very early spring the females ovulate and then find a mate to fertilize the developing eggs. She then lays multiple clutches of eggs that will hatch in the late spring and early summer when food is plentiful.

Then they wander around and interact with other males but don't produce more eggs. Generally breeders encourage adjusted ovulation times by cooling the dragons at various times to meet their needs. My m/f pairs only lay eggs in the spring/early summer and all are done now. I've never seen them mate except in the spring. I've had females lay up to 6 clutches but once their done their done. All of my females are at top weight and could probably handle laying more but they don't.

Thanks guys...like always, I seemed to have brought up another contraversial topic lol...it's all good tho. I was just wondering.

I know I bought Bindy in December and she was 5 weeks, so yeah her breeder prolly did the cooling thing...?

Thanks again...I've missed y'all!

I don't think it's controversial. I stated that there are always exceptions. Especially with BD's. I have 20 and everyone acts differently. Some poop twice a day and some poop once a month. Their tastes vary widely. All the variation between animals is just their way of stressing their human keepers. lol.

yup exactly. its just like dragons who like greens and those who dont, some like crickets, some dont. some like people, some dont.

This is my females first year laying eggs (they turned 2 this year) and she has laid 6 clutches so far with no problems - she goes in the lay box and 20 minutes later she is beating the eggs down. My other female has laid 5 clutches and has a very hard time doing it. She has taken 3 days in the lay box and 2.5 of her clutches had lots of bad eggs in them. I sure hope that they are done now.

As for the depression thing you were talking about I also have experienced that. I tried to separate my male from the females and one of the females will not sleep or eat unless the male is there for her to sleep on.

I've gotten 7 clucthes out of my primary breeding pair this year and somewhere around 220 eggs of which about 200 were good fertile eggs. I was told by steve at bloodbank that that was not suprising so I'm taking him at his word. Thanks to Steve by the way for all the help, I don't have it down perfect yet but I get a little better with every baby. By the way I'm almost fedex certified now, what a hastle thats been.
