Parasites and Garlic Question....

Laurah Sep 03, 2003 12:44 AM

Hi
I've been reading about digestive track parasites and came across a home remedy health site that said that eating large amounts of garlic helps rid the body of them. I have also heard of fish food with garlic extracts to help out in getting rid of parasites. This made me wonder if garlic could be used in helping get rid of parasites in toads. (Just want to say here I'm NOT thinking of trying it.... only wondering out loud.)
Anyone know if feeding garlic to toads is harmful? Maybe dusting food with a tiny amount of garlic powder could be beneficial to avoiding parasite problems in toads?
Again, just thinking out loud and have no intention of trying it but wondering if there is any merit to the thought! (-:

Despite most vertebrates having the same organ systems, they don't all use the same treatment (obviously). I haven't heard of garlic discussed in any scientific literature on herp parasties. I think that with how cheaply and safe modern parasite medications can be ministered, it would be very unwise to try something untested and without any scientific backing. Panacure, for instance, has been shown to be safe when administered at 5,000 times the normal dosage. Why even bother with anything else!

Interstingly, on the hognose snake forum, there has been some discussions on the use of grafefruit seed extract to cure regurgitation with excellent results.
