Gravid...how can you tell?

bladerunner8u Jul 16, 2008 07:16 PM

I found this huge female simus and she seems extra fat. How can to tell for sure if she is gravid?

Awesome! I would watch her super close because they lay eggs around August. That one looks like it could dump about 13 eggs on you. Kevin

It's probably safe to say that snake is going to lay. Heres what I did with mine. I set my wildcaught female up in a 32 quart sterilite with a small undertank heater on one side which she used up untill she laid. Even though I had two nest boxes in with her she decided to lay all 13 eggs underneath her waterbowl which if I had not checked on her that day she laid all the eggs they would have dried out, that's why I mentioned to keep a close eye on her. I incubated the eggs at 75-76 degrees and got 8 females and 5 males all perfect,no kinks and everybody ate eventually. The babies like it super humid, like 70-80 percent, but proper ventilation is crucial! If she does lay I would see if she takes a few meals then release her right where you found her. I've had no luck acclimating any wilcaught adult simus longterm myself, males or females. It's the babies you want which do well if setup right. Good Luck!!! Kevin

Thanks Kevin!
I have kept Simus but lost my male this year so I had a lone female till I got lucky finding this one. So I will most likely keep a male and do what you said and release the female. Do you live in florida I assume you live in central florida?

I don't live in florida actually, would love to herp certain areas there though. I was just lucky enough to score a wildcaught female simus in 2006 that laid those eggs for me. I've purchased other wildcaught simus, males and females and they do okay for awhile then go downhill for me. Some snakes just seem to know their in jail I guess. I think wild simus stay buried in sandy type soils for extended periods in the wild and only surface periodically??? I haven't had any problems with c.b. or captive born simus except skipping a meal every now and then. Kevin
