OT: I was mowing lawn last night

boxienuts Jul 16, 2008 10:57 PM

and this little yearling girl popped out, let me pick her up, very calm, I put her in a tub took some pics and offered a worm then released her. Some of you may remember last spring I found a pair of brownsnakes in my backyard and the female had 5 babies in captivity and i gave them a few garden worms to headstart them and then let them go by my pond in the back yard. So maaaaaaybe this is one of them? To bad I didn't put an ID of some sort on them. Haven't seen any garters yet this year, last year I had a yearling red-sided (wild as heck) hanging out by my pond that I saw on several occations, but he wouldn't let me get with in 5 ft.

Gotta love them Dekays!

Sounds crazy, but if you mow when it is hot out, it reduces the risk of running them over.

Nice photo work Jeff

Wayne

Thanks Wayne, ya you do have to love the Dekays, they are so small and cute, like the garters they are very alert, while they can be defensive they arent really aggressive. They aren't colorfull but they are cute.

For years I've had them in my backyard and I don't live in a rural area. I'm in Staten Island NY. Sad to say I haven't seen one yet this year. I'm getting nervous they are no longer on my property.

Try looking early in the morning, or at dusk.

Dekayi snakes are one of the most adapted species to living in urban areas.

However due to the small size, birds will eat them.

Wayne
