Daytona Show

FatBoyBallPython Jul 17, 2008 12:16 PM

So, who all on here is planning on making the trip to Daytona this year? Have heard some of the "big guys" are not going to be there this year. I emailed the show this week and they said a vendors list will be out soon. Reguardless, the Fat Boys will be there. Hope to see you all there!

I am hearing that it is the new permit system that is keeping so many vendors away. If I understand it correctly every customer that buys any of the big stuff (retics, burms, etc) even babies has to get the new $100 permit. I was told that it was per animal. Not sure how many people would buy $100 permit to purchase a $100-200 snake. I was also told that it is for all the animals sold in Florida whether you are a Florida native or not. If that is right I understand why some dealers would just pass.

FatBoyBallPython Jul 17, 2008 12:43 PM

I know you may not be sure, but is this permit for just the big snakes or for balls and other smaller snakes too?

Its for snakes like burmese, anacondas, retics, afican rocks, and savanah monitors.I live here in miami and its because they have found so many burmese pythons in the glades over 10ft long.As for ball pythons their is no permit restriction yet.

djslurp1200 Jul 17, 2008 01:44 PM

FATBOY's! We'll be there! Can't wait either! We'll be at the daytona hilton!

I don't think balls will need any permits or anything to keep. They are too docile, Don't get overly large and are very easy to rehome.

Giants on the other hand are a differen't story... Many of the people that buy them do so on impulsive buys and when it comes to normals and even normal albino's! You can't even give those things away!! Just check your local Reptile Shelter/Rescue. With the Bans and regulations happening across the country There just isn't really a big market for Big snakes anymore... I don't agree with bans but permits will help weed out the impulsive buys from the responsible genuine herpers.

OKReptileRescue Jul 17, 2008 02:10 PM

I think its good that there is a permit required-- it will stop a lot of the impulse buys... BUT-- are ppl. requrired to get one now- after they've had teh snake for many years? If so- more are going to be released.

I have seen a huge decrease in calls lately about the big snakes-- we could reasonably house 8 more as we sit- but I have a 2500 credit limit at lowes and can get more cages built over night -- but I've never had this many cages empty... its wierd really...

I dunno... we were talking about going to daytona just to look -- but we'll stick with arlington-- one of my favorite breeders will be there and i'm ready to meet them- lol. Arlington is close enough and big enough to suit me. sure wouldn't mind a day at the beach though...

even if you have had the snake for years. Of course it will backfire in some cases. Our local herp society has taken in rescues and found homes for them for years. But Burmese pythons(one of the most common donations) were always hard to find homes for - now almost impossible! And none of us (who usually do the rescues) especially want to buy the permit and keep the unwieldy snakes ourselves. So we turn them down if we don't already know of a good home. We tell them not to release them, but if they give them to FWC (Fiah and Game), they will probably be euthanized. So what do you think they will do?

We have the same problem with red ear slider (turtles) - another new law. If you already had one, you can keep it. But not only are sales banned, you can't even give it away. So our herp society can't find a new home for these turtles. They are even more common donations than Burmese pythons. Now we can't take them and can't find homes for them. What do you think will happen next? If they had banned sales, but allowed donations, the shops wouldn't be selling them, we could find homes for the ones here already, and eventually the supply would dry up. They are not valuable enough for people to ask to have them shipped out of state, unfortunately.

New laws can have GREAT intentions. But there are very often unintended consequences. New, restrictive laws should only be passed after really careful study and thought about the REAL consequences likely, not just how good it sounds on paper.

OKReptileRescue Jul 17, 2008 08:43 PM

That is very interesting-- I'd almost be willing to drive to Fl. to pick up a load of 8-10 big burms or even the turtles-- I've got the space here and the means to find them homes--
I can't believe the law about the turtles-- how stupid!!

I just don't see how a $100 permit is going to fix the problem NOW. I think thats just going to make it worse before it gets better--- while its stopping people from getting more-- its going to encourage more people to release thier current pets to get out of the permit... geez...

a $100 permit will mean that people who have them...really want them and know what they are doing so we don't have 1000's each year showing up at shelters...like cats and dogs. I agree with the giving away thing...Although Fish and game had a donation day in Miami recently. I know for a fact that many of those animals ended up with large dealers...but at least they where not killed or released.

turtle soup can be made from big redears too.....

and big enough burmese can be sliced into steaks like salmon and marinated ,grilled and BBQ sauce added?...

I am serious......might as well use what you got.....you can't do anything else with them so why not ?

......I have guys here asking me for snakes to eat all the time and I tell them as soon as I find them cheap enough I'll get them some........they won't be the species they actually are used to eating in Viet Nam......but they are willing to try new species and see how they are....

.......no wonder there are so many released critters out there.......sounds like it's gonna get worse......

I agree, make boots out of them also.I would rathe have the boots and belts and on the menu than the laws we have now because some people did not want to deal with the big snakes and released them.

Hey!!! Im going....it will be my first time!!! As far as the "big boys" going...I have emailed a few about purchasing animals in daytona...all that i spoke with were setting up booths there.......just my 2 cents anyways......looking forward to meeting new people and putting faces with folks on here i have become friends with already! Mike

just the big pythons (Burms, retics, Af. rocks, scrubs,), plus anacondas and Nile monitors (not other monitors at this time). And it is just one permit for one person, $100 per year, for however many "reptiles of concern" you own. BUT - if you don't live in Florida, you can buy those animals at the show, and have the breeder ship them to you after the show. You only need the permit to take possession in Florida.

But I do agree, not many people will buy the permit, or pay the shipping, for the cheaper large reptiles. It is a dying market as many local and state governments continue to ban or restrict them.

We'll be there! We finally decided to get a table this year. I can't wait! Hope to see everyone.

Whatever it takes to get it. Dont get me wrong i love this state way more than i ever liked Boston but they will find ways to rob you blind. I had a traffic ticket paid it and they got the payment a day late. Rather than telling me i owe them a late fee they suspended my licence so i had to pay a late fee and a reinstatment fee. They are pretty clever when it comes to finding ways to take our money. I hope it dont go for balls to cause i didnt get a permit lol....

Doesn't Florida also have some pretty restrictive regulations about just selling snakes (permits ect.)? Maybe the big show should be somewhere that wants the business.

louie1 Jul 18, 2008 08:36 AM

Yes! the big show be held in Arlington, TX from now on!! Just throwing it out there!

...excellent state and leading the way in which exotics should be handled. If we as owners of exotics do not get these "rules" started in the right direction then we will not be able to own any type of animals besides cats and dogs in the near future. The reason we have Permits instead of an outright ban of large constrictors is thanks in part to a group of business people involved with exotics...other states should follow the guidelines set forth by Florida and we would not be worrying about the federal government stepping in and causing all kinds of problems.

Not really. You need a permit to sell reptiles, but thats about every state now a days. The ROC permit is something different entirely.

We will be there again this year but we are not setting up. We had tables there the last 2 years in a row and both years the cost of tables well out weighed the profits. There is unfortunatly too many people with Ball Morphs there. Everyother table has them wether they are know for them or not and we found it next to impossible to sell things. I do have many friends that are larger breeders and have done very well at the show, from what I understand you do best if you set up sales before the show and have people pay and pick up there. Anyways we will still be going to enjoy friends and parties See you all there. Hope you all have safe travels ..
