color questions

tribbielvr Sep 03, 2003 05:44 AM

I have some questions about color terms in leos. First, I never see anyone say "hypo high yellow"....what do you call a high yellow with just a few spots?

Also, I have seen alot of leos advertised as tangerine but they appear to ME to be yellow with just some red coloration on the tail? Also, you never hear "high yellow carrot tail"?

I hatched some leos that ARE a definate yellow but with quite a bit of carrot to the tail, what DO you call them?
Thanks
Nina

First of all, the classic definition of High Yellow.
This is a leo that does not have any spotting on its hind legs, from hatchling on into adulthood. This definition comes from The Leopard Gecko Manual.

The reason you do not see the term you asked about is that Hypo is an extention of the High Yellow morph.

About the tangerine. When the coloring is marginal, and there are a lot of marginal tangs out there, the coloring can be hard to pick up in a photograph. The lighting has to be just right and most of us just are not pro photographers. In this case I would ask for pics in different lighting and ask for a guarantee on the animal. That you be able to return it if not as advertised.

I would also be careful about buying marginal color morphs as hatchlings/juvies. Leos go through a TON of changes colorwise as they mature. See my post on the snow leo below.
