Personally I'd ace the carpet and go with aspen (that's just me)! As for leaving her cage, kings and milks are secretive in general, she could be coming out when you don't see her. If she's feeding well and seems to be in good health I wouldn't be concerned.

I use that carpet above the under tank heater so it doesn't get too hot where the snake can contact there, and then I put aspen on top of that.

That's a neat idea, but don't you have problems with the snakes just crawling under the carpet?

No, I actually just cut out a square big enough to cover the UTH, then I tape it down to the bottom of the tank.

And every time I clean the tank, of course, I make sure the tape is secure to the bottom so the snake can't snag a sticky part on his or her way by.

I might have to give that a try... the hotter it gets outside, the colder my mom sets the AC and the more the snakes try to hang out right on their heaters...

First off, I'd ditch the carpet... too much of a hassle...

I prefer to use Carefresh pet bedding for my snakes, but it is expensive, so I've switched to aspen shavings. The snakes are doing very well on that and its really cheap, especially if you have a local Tractor Supply.

Don't use Pine or cedar shavings, the smell coming off them has been known to cause respriatory problems in rodents, so I can't imagine it'd be any better for your snakes... They might smell nice to you, but you don't have to live in them...

If you want cheap bedding, newspaper or cheap paper towels can be used also... If you're already getting a daily newspaper, it might be worth it for you to just use that...

As for it not coming out of the hide after eating, unless I bother my snakes, they most times won't come back out until they're hungry again, so not seeing it for 4 days is normal... If its still really small, its going to feel insecure about coming out.... The bigger they get, the more you see them...

For my snakes I have also used reptile carpet over the uth covered with aspen. As far as them going under the carpet, I used duct tape to prevent that and the aspen is about 2 or 3 inches deep to facilitate burrowing.

You could use dog poo for a substrate on Florida kings. They are tough as nails.

I tried that - but the scent drove mine crazy. He busted out of his tub, and I haven't seen my Chihihaua since.
