Regarding Temperaments

gtpMaverick Jul 18, 2008 09:28 PM

Hi I've had a few chondros but My friend is about to get one and he wants one only if its one of the tamest and friendliest (i know their GTP's and thats hard) ive had only biaks and know that ARU's and Marueks are usually the nice ones but i dont wanna set him up with a less than tame snake
I just wanna get it straight to which gtp locales are the friendliest because everyone seems to have different opinions
thanks

My vote goes to the Sorong but if he wants a tame snake to handle, I'd tell him to get a ball.

If your friend ONLY wants one that is tame, then find a sub adult or adult that can be handled, regardless of locale. The reason opinions vary in this area is because experience varies. Even if you could find owners who came to a general consensus that a specific locale was more docile, it will not mean the one he gets will be tame, just because its origins trace back to that locale. It sounds like your friend is not interested in taking the chance, so what difference does locale make? Have your friend contact various breeders/collectors and ask about older animals with a more established disposition. Of course this doesn't mean they won't become aggressive over time. Good luck.

I have had green trees for sometime now and I have noticed that the biaks are the only locality the is nippy. I have had arus and they have always been docile.

I'd be happy to introduce you to a nippy Aru! Brutus is just that...a brute! Smacks the glass on a regular basis and has been known to attack door knobs and husbands while being held. He's never bitten me though.

They are all different. Although my biak types are somewhat "nippy", the most insane chondro I have ever owned was an import Aru type. She was great the day I got her, but once feeding, she wanted nothing more than to rip my face off every chance she could get. She was an absolute psycho.

Well yes a import of any local will want to bite. Most people say the Biaks are the most nippy of all type. But really green trees in general are not perfectly docile. In my opinion, the arus are very docile compaired to most other localitys.

I currently have several imports from various locales and most are actually quite calm. This has been the case with most imports in my experience, with the exception of biaks and arus. Sorongs and Jayas seem to accept handling quite well, and I have several that have never even huffed at me. As for Aru temperment, Greg M. even stated that his most offensive animal ever was an Aru type. I'm not saying every Aru is nasty, just the ones I've experienced. I also have a yearling Aru type outcross that is very snappy.

The best advice I can give someone looking for a calm animal is to find a breeder with animals that produce a genetic tendency for calm adults, or find yearling or older animals with calm personalities. My SCZ animals are very calm, with the exception of my original female. She is a HUGE 2000 gram female with an attitude to go along with her size. The rest are a sweet and calm as can be.
