You found a north american psuedo cobra watch out!! No actually it's a nice eastern hognose. Perfectly harmless and that is a great pic by the way.

Yes,..it's just as Charlie mentioned,...it's an Eastern Hognose(Heterodon platyrhinos). That is the typical defense posture they display,...they will try that to look threatening,...puff up and sometimes make mock strikes with their mouths closed, and if that doesn't detour the predator, they will role over upside-down and actually "play dead" with their tongues hanging out of their mouths.

They are one of the coolest snakes there ever was!

I caught a melanistic(solid black) one very similar to that one in central Florida a couple years back, and it "hooded up" for just a bit after I captured it, then was placid as a puppy dog from then on!

best regards, ~Doug

their musk smells terrible so if you pick it up, be prepared to wash you hands, arms, chest and shirt about 40 times each.

WOW! Did yu keep it? It is amazing how that hood pattern looks so close to N.atra. (true Chinese spitting cobra). Do you have better pics, and did you keep it. Also if you did keep it they only eat toads.

The two pictures I put on the website are the best pictures I have. I don't know anything about snakes so I never tried to catch it. I have seen it about three different times.

They are real neat snakes. They put on a cool defensive display and strike with their mouths closed. They pretend they are a cobra. If that fails they play dead. They do not usually bite. They are tough to keep in captivity. But western hognose do well and feed on mice readily. If you are iterested in snakes, a western hognose would be cool. Check the classifieds Other snakes.
