Big girl...Spilotes

BillyBoy Jul 19, 2008 01:08 PM

I took my big female tiger rat out today for a photo shoot. I got her March of 07 straight off the boat from Surinam. She's in the 8 foot range and just an awesome animal. Typical tiger rat attitude which is very curious and mellow until the second she feels threatened. Then she'll puff up and let you have it if you cross the boundaries. Also very defensive of her territory. I hope you like her!

She is an impressive beauty. Is that a giant mouse in the second photo?

Hahahaha!!! Yep, he was getting ready to get thumped for someone's dinner.
That's our 90# American Bulldog, Adonis hangin out in the sun.

She looks great, one of the more heavy bodied ones I have seen. Thanks for posting. Do you feed her anything besides rodents? vic h.

If you think she's heavy-bodied, you should see her boyfriend. He's a real monster (bodywise but he's got a good temperament too) and probably a full foot longer! I have found these guys do best on small meals, spaced out to every other week. Otherwise they start to get a little porky. Right now, I feed them either 2 f/t extra large mice or 1 f/t day old chick every other week and they do really well on that.

Here's a few of my adult Spilotes and pics of our AmBull pair. Hmm, seems like Spilotes and AmBulls make good pets?? My male (brindle) goes 118lbs @ 18 mos. while our female topped out at 92#. The brindle male is just 6mos. old in the pic.

Hey Bill. Nice snakes (as always) and nice AB's too! Yeah, we adopted my guy when he was about 1.5 years old, so we're not even totally sure of his genetic background. I'm thinking AB/APBT mix though.

vegasbilly Jul 22, 2008 06:25 PM

Good for you on the adoption..are his ears cropped? Rarely see AmBulls w/cropped ears but I'm glad he's out of the "system". I need to take some pics of my newest Spilotes for ya'....almost solid black w/little to no markings. Kinda' opposite of "high yellow" but unique nonetheless.

Yup, cropped ears on that guy.

Definitely get some pics up of your new dark spilotes. I saw a few of those on the classifieds and thought they were really nice looking. It would definitely be neat to see a line of all or nearly all black spilotes!

I have 1.2 spilotes. I have always thought that the resemblance was uncanny to drymarchon. I see that you have your post in the indigo forum. Is there any evidence, or rumor, that spilotes are drymarchon?

Mike Meade Jul 23, 2008 06:22 PM

I've never heard it postulated that Spilotes are Drymarchon. They are large miscellaneous colubrids, so this is where folks talk about them. It's the best fit on Kingsnake and several folks that post here keep both or are seriously thinking about it.
