puking food

collaredsguy Jul 19, 2008 03:40 PM

hey everyone my two new lizards (one of them or both not sure) is puking up its food...what does that mean. my first thought was that it wasnt hot enough, but i checked the temps and its about 94 degrees in the tank. could it be something else, such as overeating or stress,(or in the females case about to lay eggs)? let me know guys thanks...

Guy, what do you mean its 94 in the tank? Is that the ambient temp? Is the whole tank 94? If so, then you know that is too hot. You need to set up a basking area and make sure that the tank has a cool side in the 80s. If that is the basking temp, then it is too low.

Try giving them some electrolytes. Sometimes animals get dehydrated with the stress of shipping. If you have them on sand, take them off, at least temporarily until you know that they don't have impactions.

If your basking surface is only 94 degrees then it is too cool. Set up their viv like your other collared viv, with basking temps in the 100-110-115 range, and a cool side in the 80s. This is critical for digestion.

Its not a great idea to let them eat dead food if it has been sitting there for awhile, but my guess is that they are dehydrated from the heat. Adjust your temps, soak them, and give them some electrolytes, and they should be fine.
