we have him on paper towels now in another tank....should the paper towels be damp?...I am new to this please help me out here

cord still there?......
yes make them damp......not soaked
when I have one with the cord...I stick it in a damp deli-cup with nothing else till it is ready to come off....
....some people wash them first ,and some don't....(some babies will feel sticky and some won't..)

I always leave them in the vermiculite until the whole clutch is out.
