Noob question

Sean_H Jul 20, 2008 07:17 PM

I have a young Anery Corn, Not sure the about the sex yet. My question is, when i take it out of the cage and handle it, it seems to be panting or breathing heavy but it only happens when i handle it not when its lying in its cage. Is this because of stress or is it normal? Thanks

it's probably just huffing and puffing and trying to scare you away......

......hope it doesn't work....

......really ,,,they try and act all like bad and all......

.....hold a 7 foot wild bullsnake and see if it does the same thing....it's harder to hear the air coming from the little corns........LOL

So if this is not from stress the behavior should stop with time. Yes?

jyohe Jul 20, 2008 07:41 PM

it is the stress of a giant monster picking it up./...

they stop when they get bigger........

Give it a second to sniff you and slowly pick it up. He'll soon associate your scent with safety.

And don't "hold" the snake. scoop it up with a hooked finger and allow it to "walk" freely over you hands. Holding onto it makes the snake feel captured.

Walk your snake over you hands for about 15 minutes, three times a week and offer it food about ten minutes after returning it to its cage and within 2 weeks it will climb onto your hand when you reach in.

lol, true a wild bull will huff and puff and rattle it's tail as well, but it can also back it up with a mean and nasty bite too. Some are just bluffing, but some will bite the livin you know what out of ya. lol

All snakes heart rate and breathing go way up when they are initially picked up, it's just a typical nervous response when a giant swoops down on them with a hand the size of a car!..LOL!

It will get more used to being held in time, but it's still totally normal for ALL snakes breathing to increase especially when first picked up,...even long-term captives. It's just the way snakes are "wired".
