New rack I made.. details and PIC

markg Sep 03, 2003 10:59 AM

I made this from one of those closet cabinet kits from Home Depot. They sell the shelves too so no cutting of wood was necessary. The shelves are loose and come out for ease of moving the unit if needed (and I will be moving it in a few months to upstairs, which is why I didn't fix the shelves).

The shelves are held up by 3/4" extruded aluminum angle that I cut to the depth of each shelf and screwed into place using a box and 1/8" hardboard as a spacer.

The boxes are Cambro clear polycarbonate, practically unbreakable, and have the floor space of a 10 gal tank roughly.

I guess I didn't explain it well. The aluminum supports I cut from 3/4" wide extrudued aluminum angle from Home Depot. These are what hold the shelves up. You can see them under the shelves in the pic. I started on the bottom shelf, put down some 1/8" hardboard, then a box, then laid the next shelf on top of that. Next I clamped the shelf supports in place, removed the shelf and drilled and screwed in the supports. The hardboard spacer was used to give the clearance between the top of the box and the next shelf - about 1/8". I took it out and used it for the next slot.. all the way up the cabinet. 7 slots total. 14 shelf supports to cut.

The heater is simply individual heat pads - the ExoTerra brand I think. Just like Flexwatt but no wiring and more expensive. The ones I am using are 11x11. I didn't feel like running heat tape throughout the unit because I want to be able to remove the shelves easily when needed.

Where did you get the tubs?

markg Sep 04, 2003 11:42 AM

I bought them from Smart&Final, but you can get them from Cambro on the web - www.cambro.com I think. They are the polycarbonate food pans - same ones they use at Subway to hold the sandwich stuff.

There are many places on the web that sell the same tubs for a lot less than the price of what Cambro has them listed for...ex: bigtray.com among others. shop around.
