Kingnsake Morphs/Genetics

bcisco Jul 21, 2008 11:29 AM

I’m looking for a good site(s) that list the different kingsnake morphs with pictures and whether they are res/co-dom/dom. I’m more of a Ball Python guy and between NERD, SK and MJ, I have lots of good information on them.....I’m just looking for similar info on kingsnakes.

I have a 2003 male albino kingsnake (appears to be aberrant stripped…it’s hard to tell what his color should be with him being albino....he isn't banded though?) and I’ve been thinking about getting him a little lady. Before I just buy one I think looks cool, I’d like to make sure I get an appropriate morp to breed with him. I bought this guy at a reptile convention in 2006 as a pet because I liked him.....since then I've gotten several more snakes (Ball Pythons and Red Tail Boas) and should start my Ball Python breeding in October. I figure I may as well look into breeding him too.

Sounds like a Cal King.
I don't know of a single source - but there's:

ghost (single gene simple recessive pattern mutation)
hypermelanism (I believe simple recessive)
several lavender lines (single gene simple recessive)
several hypo lines (not sure how compat they are with each other)
rumored to be a simple genetic axanthic (lacks yellow) line in somebodies colony, I don't know anything about it

A lot of cal king morphs though are not simple genetic, and there seems to be some funny stuff - such as lavender and amel are simple recessive by themselves but seem to make a visual double het.

high white, banana, reverse stripe, dotted, etc. I believe are all aberrant morphs that do not always breed true (IE you might throw some banded when breeding some that look like the same)

Anyway - there's a hell of a lot of non simple pattern variation within Cal Kings in the wild, and even more in selectively bred lines.

I decided my old sig was too big.

Its best to post pics of what you have so that you will get a compatible albino gene.
