Woma substrate

bwaffa Jul 21, 2008 10:57 PM

Based on what I've read and seen in the forums, various paper beddings (from newspaper to construction paper) seem to be popular for use with womas -- what's the rationale behind this? Is it just that a more natural substrate like sand could be too easily ingested? Do aspen or pine shavings not work just fine?

If you want something that you like to look at, fine. If you want something that's easy to clean a cage, use paper.

As your woma has easily attainable humidity requirements, paper is the easiest, least expensive choice. If you want a better appearance, and pleasant odor, I would go with Aspen. I use cypress mulch for all of my pythons, but mine have a little higher humidity needs and the aspen mildews quickly in high humidity. DO NOT use pine or cedar. Both contain phenol, (albeit a low dose in pine) and this chemical is quite dangerous to reptiles. - Brian
