While we were not on this trip for the specific purpose of herping, we did see lots of lizards, a couple of water snakes and lots of turtles. The habitat for alterna is endless (if it were legal). We put in at the Pecos high bridge early in the AM on Sunday. Here are a couple of shots of the pecos as we fished it:

After fishing a while, we had to do some exploring down the Rio Grande. First we found what is known as Parida Cave - Entrance:

Thoseare my brothers acting up
Inside we found lots of petroglyphs:

and even some early American Taggers have visited here:

Looking out of the cave to the Rio Grande:

The Rio is only about 2 feet deep so we almost got stuck in my bass boat several times. These caves can only be reached by boat.
Next we went about 20 miles down river and found what is known as Pink cave. It appeared to be a small cave as the entrance was covered by trees and brush. We were wrong:

We saw LOTS of evidence of early Americans in these caves and LOTS of alterna habitat. We found sheds in almost every cave we went into and snake tracks through the tons of ash. The rocks along these areas were covered in lizards so I'm guessing there should be alterna everywhere. Unfortunately, it would be sole for observation. We caught lots of bass and had lots of fun. This may be construed as "off topic" and get put in file 13 (which is fine) but I figured this fourm is kinda dead and some folks might want to see some alterna habitat and the country we all love so much.
