Heat fluxuation?

socerpro31 Jul 22, 2008 03:25 PM

Hi all. I have had hondos for about 3 yrs now. Finally got them to breed this year. In all i will have about 24 babies if all goes well. The first of the eggs have started to hatch, in fact 3 have come out already. The pairing was a Female poss. het. hypo to and anery het hypo and tricolor het hypo poss. het albino. coolest little babies so far. 1-tricolor- yellow, orange, black. 1-tricolor- black, orange, tan. and 1-hypo tang. My question is this. Does the heat fluxuation during incubation effect the color at all? The tan tricolor has a few bands that are tan with and orange glow to them. really cool looking but never seen this before. The incubator that i use is home made and doesnt hold constatnt enough for my liking. Btwn 80-88. Laid on may 25 and hatched on July 20. Thanks for you input.

That incubator is wayyyyy too hot man. Nevermind the color, your snakes will likely be all kinked up/deformed or will not survive those temps at all. I recommend going no higher than 78-80 TOPS. If you have a warm room, just keep the eggs atop a couple inches of moist vermiculite within a plastic shoe box in that room. Even if the temps are around 75 or so, that's fine. Try to keep it relatively constant, as those much higher temps are deadly. Good luck.

Thanks for your input. The book that I have read is Applegates. In it he states that the eggs can hatch up to 85 deg. the reason I still have hope is 3 have hatched and look good. Actually im very impressed with them. Normal weight and look other than color. If more hatch and they are deformed then I know the prob is the heat flux. Im in the process of making a fridge into an incubator for next year so ill be ok next season. I know that the eggs have hit a high of about 88 but nothing bad has came out yet. Has anyone had any experiences like this? I also candled them last night and all the eggs have little snakes in them. cant tell if they are kinked or deformed but each has a developed baby.
thanks
Cody
