Help with Uploading Pictures

tortugas Sep 03, 2003 12:41 PM

Hello, I have tried to up load a simple picture of a baby tortoise, and the system indicates that the file size is too large. I have seen many pictures posted, that seem to me would have a larger file size, due to the many different colors, etc. I am using Kodak camera and software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert but I find that I have to shrink the picture significantly before I can do anything. My photos are so large when I retrieve them from the memory card, only a corner of the photo can be seen on our 17" monitor. I usually shrink by 25% using Paint before trying to email or post on the net.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Microsoft's Picture It! software has a special option for saving a copy of a file as a "web ready" picture. This mode allows users to select how much of the screen size they wish the copy to take up. For instance, 1/4 screen, 1/2 screen, full screen ect, it also has the option to set the resolution to a custom size. In addition, the size selected will also display how long it will take for this file to be transmitted, by various means, such as 28.8K modem, 56k modem, DSL, ect. This helps if the person recieving the files has a slow modem. Anyway, back to the PetHobbyist gallery, if you had Picture It! software, and selected full screen size, the files are usually about 80k, regardless of the original resolution.
Another way to post larger pictures, is to go to another website, and link the pictures. I have done this in the post "Iguana Iguana" on this forum. Go to www.fotki.com, and register. It's free. Upload your full size photo to fotki.com. After it is uploaded, click on the thumbnail, and fotki will bring up a full screen picture of your upload. RIGHT click on this, and Windows will bring up a menu. Select PROPERTIES, and click on this, it will bring up information, including a huge hypertext link that represents where on the internet your picture is located. Hold down your left mouse button, and block this link. Go to your menu bar and under EDIT select COPY. Now, go to your desktop, and start a second copy of your web browser. Go to The forum in Kingsnake you want to post a picture in. Write your message, and underneath the message window, there will be a small window called Image URL. Click in this block, and then on the menu bar, select EDIT and PASTE. The URL of your picture will be in the block. Use PREVIEW MESSAGE in the forum to check to make sure everything looks like you want it, then click SUBMIT. That's all there is to it.

will work with my Kodak camera. The way I download pictures from my camera to my computer is very easy. I simply connect the USB cable to the camera from the computer, turn on the camera and it initiates the Kodak software. Purhaps I will use your suggestion and register at the web site you suggested.

Thanks again,

Picture It! can be setup to download your photos directly into the program. I used to have a Kodak DX3500 before a bought my Minolta Dimage 5. Picture It! works fine with it. Another site that is reptile related, and allows inlimited photo storage, is www.[bleep]. The same procedure with the copy and paste of the URLs will work on that one, too.

I don't know why the Kingsnake.com website deleted the websites name, but after the www. and before the .com, is reptileforums. Maybe they don't want competition?
