emoryi huh?

gratefuldead Jul 22, 2008 08:29 PM

Hey folks...here are a few shots of emoryi that I've found in the field.

This first shot is one that some folks may have seen before, I took it back in 2005...it's an emoryi densite.

People who claim that w/c emoryi are docile...might not have a large enough sampling size.

I hope yall enjoyed...

You misidentified a few.... I'll let you figure out which ones. Ken

gratefuldead Jul 22, 2008 09:46 PM

which ones? really?

hermanbronsgeest Jul 23, 2008 02:22 AM

Seriously? The snake in the 7th picture is a Western Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus).

Guttersnacks Jul 23, 2008 09:13 AM

Quite a dangerous OOPS that could have been! I thought maybe it was a "Where's Waldo" game LOL

I get bored at work sometimes and I have photoshop, so bad things happen.

The reticulated rattler happened when doug was talking about a reporter who said a "deadly venomous retic" was removed from a laundry room.

I threw it in as a joke.

But the buy who first pointed out this "error" (as any good herper would) made reference to more than one misidentification...so I was curious which other emoryi wasn't an emoryi. Cheers.

hermanbronsgeest Jul 24, 2008 02:26 AM

That explains it. I couldn't find another species besides the GPRS's and the WM. Prairy Kingsnakes sometimes get mistaken for GPRS's, but I don't see one.

The animal that bit you looks a little like SW a "meahllmorum" variant.
The one below that looks a little like it may have some Kisatchie genes.
Emory variance, even in the same local, can be huge. Are they all from the well???

Some cool shots there - especially the "twin-spotted" emoryi in pics 8 and 9. Like Herman said, photo #7 is a Western Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus). The rest look like emoryi, to me.

No doubt, pic #7 is a Sistrus Rattler. I hope you didn't free handle that! LOl

I sure wouldn't have, Matthew! I'm guessing that the original poster did not either, since they also apparently knew what it was.

LOL.
Interesting how all these plains serpents have similar patterns. Even my pet H. nasicus looks a bit like that 'saugua..

Great set of photo's showing the variation in this species, also the similarity in pattern to the little rattler
Loved the den site one .. brilliant .. the grey(ish) emoryi would that be what they call intermontana ? sure is pretty.

how about the fifth picture, down in the well? I think I may see a solid colored body in the wall below and to the left of the pipe, could be a racer?

should read above and to the left of the pipe, and there might be a rough green in there as well, but probably a greenish colored racer.

Great post for here, guy.
(I remembered it from elsewhere and still was amazed to see it.)
.
I've found an occasional Garter, a Black Rat, a Texas Rat,a pair of "Greenish" Rats using wells as hibernacula, but nothing that dramatic.
.
I hope the location stays hidden forever!!
