Worried possible RI

ReneeValois Jul 22, 2008 09:24 PM

I was gone for a week and moved Loki to a larger enclosure so he'd have a wider temperature range while I was gone (I didn't want him to cook if it got hot and my son forgot to check on him.) But it looks like Loki instead spent all his time in the hide on the coolest end of the enclosure; when I took him out of the damp moss yesterday, I thought at first he was hissing, but then realized he was blowing air out of his nostrils--one of which looked clogged. He also occasionally made a whistling noise. I moved his favored hide to a warmer area of the tank.

Today he blew air again today when I first took him out, and has even opened his mouth wide (like a yawn) a couple times. Does this sound like a respiratory infection? If so, is it treatable at home or do I need to get him to a vet ASAP?

Also, is it safe to feed him right now, or does the clogged nostril make that risky? Any advice is appreciated!!!

IMO watch for signs. When he yawned, did you notice if the mouth had excessive mucous?

IMO feeding should be fine.

And I would get the temps up a couple of degrees from norm just to be on the safe side.

I opened my mouth and out flowed a melody black.

The inside of his mouth looked normal to me, but I have to admit, I don't look inside his mouth that often and am not that versed in its "normal" appearance! Yesterday I did place his apparently "favorite" hide (he has three with damp moss, but mostly prefers this one) on the warmer end of the enclosure(with the heating pad underneath). I will try feeding him later today and see how he handles that. Thanks for your advice!

When I took Loki out last night, he didn't blow air, whistle or "yawn" like the night before. In fact, he looked pretty normal (except that he was starting to turn milky in pre-shed). I fed him a mouse and he did just fine with it; in fact he wasn't in any hurry to go back in his tank afterwards. So my anxiety over a possilbe RI looks to have been premature. (I have to admit I worry more about Loki than any of my other pets because his temperature and humidity requirements are narrower----so he seems more fragile to me.)

On a more disappointing note: I'm dying to get the baby female blood python I've picked out from the breeder but he says of the 70 or so babies he's hatched out, only 3 or 4 have NOT yet eaten---and of course mine is one of them. SO I'm still waiting for my birthday present (nearly a month after my birthday). Ah well, anticipation will make the final arrival even better, right?
