Probing Spilotes

vegasbilly Jul 22, 2008 11:52 PM

I need to re-probe my group as all are at or nearing "adulthood" and in the many years I've been afflicted w/this hobby, I've been suprised my share of times (5 year old "male GTP" laid her 1st clutch last season lol). I know that both sexes probe deep so any row counts y'all have experienced would be a big help. Probe gauge size would be a bonus!

Thanks,
Bill

Hey Bill, the problem I have with probing a 9-foot spilotes, is I have no one to do it with, so getting a good "slide" is kinda tough for me. But, I have probed my big adults several times and if I remember correctly, the female only went in like 3-4 subcaudals, with the male quite a bit more (7-10 ?). Also, do you notice any secondary sex characteristics on yours like head size, body thickness, and/or keeling? I've noticed my 3 males have noticeably more in each of these departments than my 2 females. How about yours?

Thanks for the info...you're right, it is brutal to hold one solo
for probing purposes. I have not noticed any gender-based differences....all my females are waaay bigger than the males and are much more aggressive feeders so they stay that way!
