My mice have slowed down a bit, colony #1 stopped producing altogether so I fed them off and am raising some of the babies as replacements. Colony #2 has one female who just gave birth to 3 babies, I think they're ready to feed off too. However, I noticed that in colony #3 there was one of the girls was huge! I mean, she looked like she had a tennis ball hanging from each side if you can imagine that! I can't believe she was still running around and jumping up on the screen and hanging upside down. I told my hubby that I bet she'd have 25 pinks by morning guessing from the size of her belly and even dragged him into my hobby room to see her. Of course he obliged
The next morning I checked on the small clutch of bairds rat snake eggs in the incubator and noticed that the first egg had pipped. I will really need pinks soon. Next stop was to check in on colony #3 and you guessed it, momma mouse was stretched out over a huge pile of pinks
I reached in and did a head-count. There were 22 pinks under momma mouse and 2 half eaten pinks off to the side! I couldn't believe it, 2 dozen pinks from one mouse! Thank goodness there were a couple of other moms with hoppers that are still nursing.
So, now I have 3 baby bairdi, 2 have already eaten their first pink. The pinks and the 2 that have eaten are 3 days old. The third bairdi is 2 days old. I can't keep the pinks from growing and none of my mice look look like they're pregnant. I know this question has been raised many many times, but please, just once more....What is the best way to kill the pinks so I can freeze them? I know I have read that co2 isn't effective.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Marcia
