Mixing Tree Frog Species

iwannafrog Sep 03, 2003 02:20 PM

Hi! I am wondering if anyone could give me an opinion about mixing tree frog species. I would like to get Tiger Leg Monkey Frogs and Red Eye Tree Frogs. Can you put them together? Also does anyone know if there is an actual difference between RETF and Red Eye Leaf Frogs? I have lokoed at them both and they look exactly the same as far as I can see. ny help wold be appreciated. Thanks!

It's nver a good idea to mix any species, especially with Red Eyes. RETFs can be easily stressed and mixing them with something other than their own species can and will bring on this stress. There is also the danger of parasite transfer between species. You also have to keep in mind that ALL frogs and toads are toxic, this is a defense and if stressed or feeling threatened they will release this toxin which could kill the others in the enclosure with them. A costly outcome when there are deaths. I would recomend choosing one species and going with that.

As for RETF and RELF, I believe that they are one and the same. They both come up under the same species name.

Thank you so much. I think I will go with RETF. And then amybe I will set up a smaller tank for a TLMF. Thanks for the info.

Phyllomedusa hpyochondrialis should have as large of tank as Agalychnis callidryas if same number of individuals.

Thanks!!! And thank you to iwannafrog for being open to suggestions. It's great that there are those out there who are looking to simply provide the best for their froggies!! I think you'll really enjoy REs I love my two to bits! They are so great and growing so well. I raised them from tadpoles and they are the only two that survived out of 8. One is about an inch and a half now (Zero Cool) and the other is about an inch (Dozer) They are both getting to the point now where I think their growth is starting to possibly show sex. I think that Zero may be female and Dozer male.... I THINK. We shall see once they reach maturity. It would be great to have one of each just to see how differently they act. I don't think I'm going to breed them simply because I don't feel that I'll be ready for that when the time comes. But they will remain in the same enclosure. I think so long as I don't condition them for breeding then it won't happen. If it happens on its own, well cool I'll deal with it then LOL I dealt with Cubans breeding and successfully raised 36 babies from that batch of eggs. (still have 33 that I really need to get rid of, they are getting close to being too big for the tank they are in now and I really don't want THAT many frogs LOL)

Not to be the voice of contention here, but I have my RETFs and Tigerlegs together and they do very well with eacother. I also know that MASCARINOS frogs also mixes and breeds VERY succesfully the 2 species. HOWEVER, the possibilty of problems really is much greater when you put the 2 together. I put mine together and I suppose I got lucky that I had no parasite/disease issues. So anyhow, I am just saying that they will not kill eachother, and they probably won't poison eachother, but that does not neccesarily make it the best idea. Oh, one other thing, I have mine in a very large and VERY well planted and maintained terrarium which helps greatly to avoid stress, but it takes a lot of work to maintain.
