KGW (Portland, Oregon) 21 July 08 Fewer frogs found for Jefferson jumping contest
Jefferson, Ore.: Frogs have been getting harder to find in recent years, making things a little tougher for one of the favorite events at the Jefferson Mint Festival.
The usual hunters for the annual contest in the small Willamette Valley farm town turned up only 11 of the slippery amphibians this year, down from 25 in 2007.
And this year, many of the frogs were happy to just sit out the competition in a field near Jefferson Middle School, refusing to jump.
Trophies are awarded to the competitors whose frogs jump the farthest in three hops. The best series of hops was 9 feet, 9 inches.
