FRASER COAST CHRONICLE (Australia) 22 July 08 Deadly game of snakes 'n' adders (Jessica Grewal)
Deadly snakes may be slithering dangerously close to Fraser Island resorts and camping grounds where bush rats have been breeding after dingoes, the rodents' biggest predators, were shut out.
Since the controversial dingo fences were erected earlier this year residents have rejected claims by Queensland Parks and Wildlife that dingoes posed a threat to those living and holidaying on the Island.
Last week snake bite victim Noeline Walk revealed there was a growing fear among residents that a system created to keep out one potentially dangerous animal was making way for a much more sinister creature to threaten the safety of residents and tourists.
For the past 30 years Ms Walk has strolled Fraser Island beaches and says she has never had trouble with a dingo but has come across deadly death adders on many occasions and was bitten by one four years ago.
