I baught a trio from him last year and im planning on getting some more from him soon. They are verry good quality animals and Doug is a good guy. I guess I dont understand the other question you asked. Yes they are v. tristis tristis Their heads and tails start to turn black as they mature. I also think they make a verry good first monitor they are just as hardy as ackies are. Thanks Ian
Doug is a good buddy of mine. I see him every week when I order my larger rodents. Those black heads are only a couple weeks old and are doing great. I was also thinkin of getting a couple off of him as well...but I dont want to jump into getting any more monitors.
Thats kinda what I was looking for as well the care for them.
Thanks

"Also how are Black Headed monitors?"
Very, very shy.
I bought a trio of tristis from Doug the 31st last month. He also produced my JCP's, he's a great guy with great animals, hand delivering the animals to me (he's local). If you are really interested in v. tristis tristis I'd jump on his or I might snatch the rest of his up
(kidding, I'm in the search of pilbara's and kimberly's right now).
I've spoken to two tristis breeders and both said that these guys are lightning quick and shy. I've only had 10 days with them and I can tell you they certainly are very quick! They can dart across their (temporary) 4' long cage in a fraction of a second and they are only a few inches long!
On the shy point however, I have had a different experience (though, I've only had mine for 1.5 weeks). I try not to handle them as they are so small and if they were to get out they'd disappear and I'm certain I'd never see them again...
I have put my hand in the cage a bit (doing a bit of rearranging) and 1 of the 3 is quite shy. It doesn't like being around my hand at all, but feels secure if it's about 1' away (won't dart away). One of the other two will keep an eye on me, sometimes approach, sometimes move away (very inquisitive/curious). The last one is very "open" for lack of a better word and if I leave my hand in the cage, it'll readily approach and jump on (at which point I try to escort him off in fear of an escape and unneeded stress).
So how shy are they? Nothing like timors in my experience. Mine are extremely active, and a huge joy to observe as they are almost always visible, doing laps, hunting food, climbing structures in their cage, etc. So far they've been a joy to keep, by far the funnest lizard to observe that I've kept so far. I can sense that they are extremely intelligent and observant. I really am considering picking up two more as I do have the space, I love them.
I hesitate to post this photo as it was temporary housing the night I brought them home. I had them delivered at work and had to work a late evening, so was not able to get any dirt on my way home. They needed something and I had paper towels so that's what they got. They are now on a soil/sand mix. I haven't taken any recent pictures, but they are growing very quickly and sure are little cricket monsters.

Feel free to ask any questions, I only have very limited experience with them but may be able to answer anyway.
PS. The cage is also temporary and isn't very photogenic (a multiple time hand me down acrylic tank that is quite full of scratches, not good for taking photos of them in their enclosure and I'm not keen on removing them for photos at this size).
