Do mealies need a moisture source?

PoohBear03031 Sep 03, 2003 04:15 PM

I recently got 1000 mealies in, I have them in a bedding of regular oats that I ground up finely in the food processor. this is the first time I have ever bought them in bulk, so I am not really sure what I should be doing. Any helpful advice? Thanks in advance.

You need to give all your feeder insects you feed to your gecko a moisture/water source.

I give all my feeder insects baby cut carrots. I think these are best since they do not mold. For your mealworms I feed mine carrots every other day or every other 2 days. If you ever want to breed them so you have a mealworm colony, I have a care page about it on my website that'll help you.

It is important to give a VARIED source of food, both wet AND dry. I feed cabbage, squash, apple, pear, anything that is firm.

Yes, they do require moisture. I use freshly sliced potato/carrot/apple to aid in the gutloading process of mealies, supers, and crix. Make sure to provide a lot of ventilation when feeding your mealies fresh foods. For 1000 mealies, I’d estimate that you need 3-4 slices of potato a day. They should be able to eat everything within a 24 hour period, if not cut back how much you give them. If you have powdered milk available, sprinkle some in mealie container, when they eat it, some of the calcium gets passed onto your geckos. Let us know if you have any more questions. Good luck!
