OT MN Zoo Pics DUW

olstyn Jul 25, 2008 07:21 PM

Well, since I was told I had to "not just lurk," here's some photos I took today @ the MN Zoo. Most of them are even in focus!

A bunch from the butterfly garden (hooray for macro mode and cooperative butterflies!):

...and a tortoise that just looked oh so very satisfied with its meal:

Lovely shots! I took my daughter to that butterfly garden recently too. We spent the day at the MN Zoo for my birthday on June 27th. Since you presumably live in Minnesota (like me), are you a member of the Minnesota Herpetological Society? If so, we might run into each other at meetings (or events)...

I'm not a member, but my brother is, and I've thought of joining and/or tagging along to a meeting or two several times; it just hasn't happened yet. If you've ever been a part of the herp society's presence at the Renaissance Festival, we may have met there.

Yes, I bring my snakes to the Ren Fest, usually on Sundays (since I have another volunteer commitment that often ties up my Saturday afternoons). In fact I'll be there tomorrow helping with the Como Cottage cleanup in preparation for the opening. Say hi when you're at the Fest!

Yes, it is fun, especially when you're part of the action. The Minnesota Herpetological Society presents reptiles of all kinds at our "Como Cottage" every day of the Festival (weekends mid August through September). We always have alligators, giant tortoises (one roams the ground wearing a kilt) and plenty of lizards and snakes---from corn snakes to reticulated pythons. And we take our reptiles with us for the big daily parade.

The animals are a huge draw and it's the biggest fundraiser of the year for us. It takes a lot of volunteers but it's great to educate people about reptiles. Every year we get a lot of people afraid of snakes who touch one for the first time and begin to discover that they don't need to fear them. I especially admire parents who whisper to me that they're afraid of snakes but they don't want their kids to be, and they loudly and cheerfully encourage their children to touch the cool snakes.

In that case, if we make it to Fest this year, we'll be sure to look for you. Also, like I said, I intend to tag along to a Herp Society meeting with my brother at some point, though I can't make it to the August one, so I guess that'll happen at a nebulous "sometime" in the future.

Yes, do stop by Como Cottage if you get to the Fest! We always have a great bunch of animals (and people) there.

I've had to miss the last few MHS meetings myself but plan to make the August and September meetings---and October too, actually, since Kathy Love's supposed to be giving a talk (she's a corn snake breeder who wrote a great guidebook on the snakes).

There are always lots of interesting animals up for adoption at the meetings (fun to look at even if you can't take one)---and you can buy mice/rats much more cheaply through the Society than you can in stores (it's where I buy all mine).

Hope to see you there "sometime"!
