If you have a place to collect your own, you can go for the thickness that you want. It has some interesting shapes to it. I've started to use thicker pieces as I like their gnarled look. I've custom bent some pencil thickness grapevines over a steaming tea kettle. You have to be patient and let the steam do it's work.

I either bake it in the oven @ 250 degrees for 20 minutes or more, depending on the thickness of the piece. Or, for large pieces, you can put them in a garbage can with a 10:1 water:bleach mixture. Leave it outside in the sun and overnight. Then you should repeatedly rinse and dry until you can't smell bleach anymore. If you do this, you won't have to worry about pests coming in with it and it will be nontoxic to the cham.

I've taken to sanding off a lot of the bark as it seems in a cham cage, over time, the constant getting wet and drying causes the bark to flake off and mess up the cage. For larger pieces with tougher bark, I use a surform tool.

give it a try!
