Unexpected leopard in todays litter.

kirby Jul 25, 2008 10:27 PM

This morning my leopard female dropped a small litter of very interesting babies. The father is my best Motley male that always throws babies with very good Motley patterns. The Motleys that came out are mostly very dark/black. Many exhibit extensive striping. I only took a few pictures and will take more after they shed which will hopefully better show what they look like.

The strange thing about the litter is that in addition to the Motleys het for Leopard and the hets there is one leopard boa. This female hasn't bred before and obviously this Motley male is not het for leopard.

I am very happy to have this litter and hopefully add to the leopard project which i think will become a very popular and interesting project when the Leopard gene is put into a variety of morphs.

This one is almost black and shows extensive striping.

Just speculation and of course a better pic after it sheds may be more insightful, but how do we not know that that dark motley isn't a motley leopard. The arabesque motley was a very subtle combo since the motley is such a strong gene. Just a thought, but of course you are there to see it in person. Great litter and congrats on your new genetic anomaly.

Congratulations on another great litter Bill.

Yet another that doesn't conform to the genetics rule book! It seems like many of these litters with suprise results generally have a Motley involved. I am begining to wonder if the Motley gene somehow influences other morphs in a way we don't yet understand?

Bill,

I just love it when good unexpected things like that happen.

Congrats Bill!!! You are having a great season!!!

That is very interesting about the Leopard boa popping up in the litter...it will be very interesting to see what it can produce...I hope it is a male!

I had a similar experience when I bred a first time leopard female to a male sunglow and found an albino in the litter. Unfortunately it was kinked and had to be euthanized but I never had an explanation for why it should have showed up in the first place! That's what makes breeding so interesting!

Those are some amazing looking babies. Is the leopard a male or a female? Will these guys be making the trip down to Daytona?

I will hopefully get better pictures after they shed.

that the motley was somehow actually het for leopard? Which would explain the leopard in the litter?

Also, that might explain the really dark striped motley could actually be a motley leopard if this is the case?

Interesting nonetheless...Congrats Bill!
