My little energizer bunny

Kaitlyn Sep 03, 2003 05:08 PM

About a month ago my female veiled's joints started to swell and she seemed to have lost her grip in one front hand and one back. I rushed her to the nearest reptile vet in my area, Dr Alvin Atlas where he checked her out. An x-ray was taken of her and it was found out that her bone in her rear left ankle was gone, it just disintigrated. Dr. Alvin gave me pure calcium drops to give her daily along with some antibiotics. He said that it might be a combination of changing calcium level, arthritis, and old age. He said that she was a relic, going on 7 years. Is this true? how old have your chameleons lived? He also said that because i kept her outside and gave her access to natural sunlight, it kept her in good health.
To compensate for her loss of grip, i switched her from her ficus tree to a pothos plant where she happily sits on the leaves, and does not have to worry about balancing with only two good griping hands. But even after all of this, her spirits are still high, she still gets mad at me and puffs up when i have to give her her meds, still eats like there's no tomorrow, and hisses at my little brother when he walks by (she hates him, and i don't know why. as soon as she recognizes who he is, she will puff up and stand on her rear feet and hiss at him till he goes away. good little lizard... )
The Vet said that i might not have a year left with her, but as long as she still eats and acts like her normal premodonna self, i will hope. I just fear that it is her time, so i plan on pampering her until the end does come. Thank you for reading this, it makes me feel better writing it down.

Kaitlyn,

You sound like a very special mom! Had you ever bred her? Did you find her to have problems becoming egg bound from not breeding? Just curious

Regardless of when her time comes she was lucky to have you as her Mom - pretty funny about your brother! LOL

no, i have never bred her, and she has never had any laying problems other than pms...but i don't blame her. she usually laid around 40-50 eggs, about 3 times a year maybe less, i don't quite remember when she started though.

thanks for your answer!

I have an old guy so I know how you feel. He doesn't get around like he used to but I will take care of Salvador till his time comes. Where can we get those little "rascal" scooters the seniors use but little tiny tree climbing ones.
