Good for you for helping a Ball. I also own a rescued ball python. Have you taken the snake to the vet for a check up? This is important, especially for snakes that have been poorly cared for, because balls are very good at hiding pain or discomfort. Though balls are notoriously picky eaters, their feeding behavior can a good indicator if they are not doing too well. If your snake looks like it had a hard time eating, I would take him or her to the vet, just to be safe. Snakes can't cough, so if they choke, it is hard for them to recover on their own. Also try to bring in a fecal sample to the vet, as abdominal swelling can also be a sign of internal parasites (these often need to be treated with antibiotics)
