question about mice

abeercan01 Jul 27, 2008 03:28 AM

hey I was wondering what y'all feel about feeding wild caught mice to a snake. I have a huge problem with mice getting into my calf feed so I made some live traps. Within a couple days I have caught 19 mice. I thought about either feeding them to my copperheads or starting another breeding group. I used to breed alot of mice when most of my snakes ate mice but now I only have a few left that still do. The others have moved to rats and rabbits.

I've fed them to my Saharan sand boas with no ill effects. I understand wild mice don't have as large a litter as domestic mice do though. So depending on what you're feeding it may or may not be worth breeding them. With as many as you're catching though, THAT shouldn't be a big deal .

They should be fine to feed to your snakes. I have live traps and catch and feed wild mice to my chickens.

There is the risk of various toxins, pesticides, fertilizers etc being fed to your snake if you use wild caught. I wouldn't risk it just to save a couple dollars.
