Nerodia erythrogaster near Lajitas

Eby Jul 27, 2008 04:05 AM

I know N. erythrogaster have been recorded in Brewster county. Does anyone know if they've been documented near Lajitas or in Presidio County?

Daryl-

My copy of Werler & Dixon shows it only as far west as eastern Brewster-not even close to Lajitas or Presidio county.

Well then, an extension may be in order! I found what sure as heck looks like juvie DOR Blotched Watersnake near Lajitas. It was in Brewster, but less than a mile from Presidio County. The poor little guy is in my freezer now. I'll post some pics later.

Any suggestions on where to take it?

Anyone want to join me for a search in nearby Presidio county?

I saw one in the dips at Lajitas a couple of years ago and asked Dixon about it, at the time he had heard of them from Lajitas (Brewster Co.) but did not have a voucher specimen. At the time, they had not been reported from Presidio Co.

Did you voucher yours? Or do i get the pleasure?

I did not. The one I found was AOR and I am still hesitant to pickle live snakes. If you want, I can pick it up when I am out next and get it to Dixon with some other things I have preserved for him or Email me direct and I will give you his email address.

As exciting as this find was, it was not the highlight of my night. I'll make a full post later that will blow your minds (well, it blew mine anyway).
